Huntik: Secrets and Seekers [2012] Season 2. 26 Episodes

"Huntik 5D! Yes, so much fun we needed an extra dimension or two to show it!"

“Huntik 5D! Yes, so much fun we needed an extra dimension or two to show it!”

Ignio Straffi parlayed Winx Club success to make Huntik: Secrets and Seekers, no doubt funding the three-year delay between seasons one and two (and a Huntik theme park attraction). If you watched season one, you know what a fun and different show it was. It had an action format like an American show, and a detailed overarching story like an anime of finite episodes.

Huntik_season_2_sophie_storyboards

Sophie Casterwill is still "the world's most dangerous teen."

Sophie Casterwill is still “the world’s most dangerous teen.”

That was a lot to live up to. Did Straffi pull it off two seasons in a row? A complex show deserves a complex answer, so we are going to say ‘yes and no’ and break it down for you. But the quality of the show and the capability of the artisans involved is not in question. As is often the case with such a fine crew, it falls upon the writers and plot developers to give them something fitting to create.

Some well done background art.

Well done background art. (That cave is like a gemologist’s dream.)

Huntik_season_2_Zhalia_storyboards

Season two in an outrageously long sentence: After kicking the professor’s butt (we miss him now) the team takes on his former right-hand man Rassimov and the eerie blood spiral cult as they apparently want to bring about the end of all life on earth, a rather dubious goal to be sure, and along the way both sides add a newbie to their ranks which ends up gobbling screen time but yields little value to the plot, action, drama, or resolution, yet probably reinforces some lesson we’re supposed to learn.

Two interesting villains.

Two interesting villains (doing classic villainous grins).

Two time-gobbling dipsticks we did not care about and a ridiculous bag of bones titan.

Two time-gobbling dipsticks we didn’t care about, and a ridiculous bag of bones titan.

The Huntik season two recipe?

  1. 1 part Pokemon
  2. 2 (many) parts civil war drama that pits brother against brother
  3. 1 part later Harry Potter (where the plot grew hazy & heavy)
  4. A pinch of the reviled Scrappy Doo (the newbs)
  5. Mix together with a tasty but unfitting dash of Power Rangers

Huntik_Season_2_Sophie_fan_art

Don’t get us wrong, Huntik is a lot better than most schlock out there, and the first season was so good that any show would be hard-pressed to live up to it. There were many times during second season where it did indeed do so. A great plus we have to mention is that for 99% of the season, they managed to not emasculate Dante Vale, super operative for the sake of making his young apprentice Lok look good.

Won't anyone help this man? Dante Vale, as usual, carrying the load... into space?

Huntik_Sophie_Casterwill_01_by_AuraRinoa

What about those important plot threads from season one? They were pretty much left dangling, and replaced by stuff not quite as interesting. What about Lok’s father in the titan world? What about Cherit’s past? What about Dante and Zhalia’s feelings for each other? Heck, Zhalia had a greatly reduced role this season, and she used to be a lot more fun.

Early on, they tantalizingly teased us with possible movement about Cherit's memory. Still, Cherit was handled so well this season, growing in power, wisdom, and likeability.

They tantalizingly teased us with near-revelations about Cherit’s past. But no dice. Still, he was handled well this season, growing in power, wisdom, and likeability.

Can you find Zhalia in this picture? Can you find her in this season?

Can you find Zhalia in this picture? Can you find her in this season?

The return of Sabriel in an early episode, Sophie’s favorite titan, was one of the most moving moments of the season. Sophie’s fight for the leadership of her clan, and the avenging of her childhood tragedy were all good stuff.

The return of Sabriel was great. One of the few things set up in season one to be paid off.

The return of Sabriel was dramatic and well done. One of the few things set up in season one to be paid off.

The mid-season climax, a tremendous budget busting battle, was one of the best episodes we’ve seen. But all of these were in the first half of the season.

Huntik_Season_2_title_card_the_spiral_war_episode_40

This battle was so chock full of budget busting assets and planning that we would not be surprised if it was far and away the most expensive and difficult episode of the season.

This battle was so chock full of budget busting assets, choreography, and story that we wouldn’t be surprised if it was far and away the most expensive and difficult episode of the season.

Who were the “Nullifiers” we kept being threatened by? Who was the “Betrayer?” Whom did he betray? The blood spirals and their goals were poorly defined, and thus the later episodes lost drama energy. And honestly, Rassimov was a good henchman, but not a charismatic lead bad guy. It was almost as if there were two Huntik season arcs crammed into one season. Neither got the full attention and revelation it deserved.

"I summon plot answers!

“I summon plot answers!

Who was this weird "betrayer?" Who did he betray? He just kind of came to life at the end of the season. "I'm the bad guy!"

Who was this weird “betrayer?” Whom did he betray? When? He just kind of came to life at the end of the season. “Look at me! I’m the bad guy!”

Straffi and the gang proved to us they still have what it takes to make awesome episodes (and apparently a theme park attraction). We just hope that they bring more of it, enough for the entirety of season three.

Dante Vale looks happy. The rest look like they're ready to punch you in the face!

Dante Vale looks (a little too) happy. The rest look like they’re ready to punch you in the face! Why so mad Sophie?

Now check out this guy rawking out with the Huntik “rock anthem” opening!

Winx Club 3D: Magic Adventure (Magica Avventura) [2010]

This is the second Winx Club movie, and like the first (Winx Club: The Secret of the Lost Kingdom) it is a self-contained, high-quality experience independent of the series. Both movies differentiate themselves with computer-generated graphics in contrast to the television show’s traditional animation (and this take is not about debating which style is best).

Flora was looking good (despite a tragic peroxide accident). Someone needs to remind the animators that her hair is supposed to be brown.

We will say that if you are going to do something, do it well. This movie for the most part has strong art design. You can make a lot of ideas look good with computer graphics. However if an idea really stinks, even the graphics may not save it. But good ideas abound, like interesting and fitting manifestations of the different character’s powers. The magics were not reduced to different colored balls of light. Such copouts plagued the television series’ fourth season.

Oh, and when in doubt, take inspiration from a classic.

Set designs and artistic touches were a visual treat. Almost all the places visited, and they were quite varied, were rich in their own way. From the mundane, like Bloom’s earthly parents home, to the fantastic like Bloom’s biological parent’s castle. Plus there were surprise colourful transitions like that GIF at the top.

Average park? Average looks? Average clothes? There is nothing average about the Winx girls. Isn't this how everyone dolls themselves up for a stroll in the fabulously average park?

The action scenes were some of the best choreographed of the franchise. It was not just blast after blast. There was maneuvering, defense and strategy. Important to us as well was the original Company of Light was not dissed. King Oritel, now restored and in his prime was not treated as second-tier to highlight the Winx girls. Instead he was out there kicking butt as one would expect from the leader of that legendary band.

King Oritel is back, and he remembered how to pose.

However this movie experience is not without flaw. Someone over in the costume design department:

  1. got too cute
  2. got drunk
  3. passed the work off to an intern
  4. is colorblind

We say this because some of the outfits were just dreadful in contrast to those cool battle suits the girls wore in the first movie.

You don't need Timmy's I.Q. to realize someone spilled paint all over Tecna's outfit.

This collection of clashing, garish awful outfits is only better for Musa. Her believix pantaloons are not hard to best...

No new characters were introduced. The villains were the Trix, who we were glad to see back (and computer generated), and the ancestral witches whose storyline we were glad to see wrap up. Despite this known cast we still felt as though we experienced travel and newness within the breadth of the wide Winx universe. This starts right at the beginning with a fun, narrated introductory 5 minutes. It was surprisingly “techy” for a magic based series.

Remember when teleporting only required Stella's cool Solarian staff and not a nuclear blast? Ah, those were the days...

The Winx girls are unperturbed! (Despite being bombarded by gamma rays...)

The movie also fell prey to the, “we know what little girls like and are going to give it to them whether it fits this movie or not” syndrome. The lead character Bloom is the primary victim of this. Sometimes portrayed as a 10-year-old girl living the fantasy life of a princess in a beautiful castle being given a pony. At other times dressing as a slightly provocative teen and lip locking with her boyfriend at times both appropriate and strange.

However this Picasso-esque virtual communication scene was visually pleasing.

We really do think the plot was too focus grouped and marketing oriented in the sense that it included every element in which a 10-year-old girl might be interested:

  • horses
  • flying horses
  • unicorns
  • flying unicorns
  • boyfriends
  • evening gowns
  • princesses
  • castles
  • princes
  • forced marriages
  • arch enemies
  • BFFs
  • big sisters
  • garish clothing
  • and amusing high school antics

Uhh...

Thankfully there was little Kiko, and even less pixies.

If you are a fan of the franchise, most flaws are easy to overlook and this movie is definitely worth seeing. Chronologically it takes place before the second half of season four. Critically we think it holds together better and makes more sense than those mishmashed, somewhat misguided episodes.

Produce more like this Straffi and perhaps Winx will attract a new generation of fans.

What can we learn from this picture? Bloom's Earth mother was a hippie. (Oh, and Bloom may not have been the prettiest baby...)

Top Ten Pretty Animated Shots Vol.02

It is time for another set of animated pictures that is easy on the eyes.  Making this top ten is a little like trying to become an actor.  Many try, but few make the cut.

We liked the visually hard edged rendering of the Enchantress Amora in Hulk Vs Thor.

Hulk_Thor_Amora_Enchantress

While this painting featured in the credits looks nothing like that hard edged version, it is still pretty.

Chun Li remains a crowd favorite – if the crowd hangs out huddled around an arcade Street Fighter machine.  ;)   Here she is from Street Fighter IV: The Ties That Bind.

TopTenPretty_Anim_Chun_Li_Street_Fighter

How does she keep that face so pretty after all those nose-crushing, lip-bashing fights?

Princess Aurora from Disney’s true classic Sleeping Beauty has time-tested stylized good looks.  Below she is dressed as the forest maiden “Briar Rose”.  We like that edged style.

Top_Ten_Pretty_Sleeping_Beauty_Aurora2

Naruto Shippuuden went downhill faster than Balloon Boy’s ill-fated, non-existent flight to nowhere.  Never-the-less, while it is no longer worth a take, it did have a purdy enemy ninja.

Top_Ten_Pretty_naruto_shippuuden_enemy_ninja

What is her deadly secret? Uhh, you do not want to see her without make-up...

Our takes on Winx Club remain top hitters.  The latest is season 4 part 1.  In honor of that popularity we could not pass up including a picture of Flora. If you do not know who Flora is, step back from the Street Fighter machine for a minute or give Naruto Shippuuden a rest for a half hour.

Top_Ten_Pretty_winx_club_flora_a

Jerrica Benton…  How we would like to see your Jem & The Holograms storyline with your deceived but true boyfriend Rio resolved.  We have been waiting since 1988…, so it is overdue.

Top_Ten_Pretty_Jem_07_Jerrica_Greek

At least Jerrica and Rio reaffirmed their love in this final season trip to Greece. Hmm Jerrica, do you dress native like this for every destination? We want to travel with you!

Ariel, the little mermaid’s mother was Queen Athena.  A lot of people seem to be searching for her online.  She was quite pretty as seen depicted here from The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning.

TopTenPretty_Anim_queen_Athena_2_Little_Mermaid

Mom's everywhere, let Queen Athena be an inspiration to you to keep in shape.

Huntik: Secrets and Seekers is pleasantly surprising most who watch it – including us!  So enough with the sad face Huntik Star Sophie Casterwill, you made the cut for this Top Ten.

Top_Ten_Pretty_Huntik_sophie_hair

Huntik_sophie_underwater_skin_diver_casterwill

Did all of Sophie's training include how to look good scuba diving? Ahh, we think it must have.

Zhalia from Huntik is not giving us a long face below, that is her usual stern expression.  But inside she had a soft heart.  Awww.

Bonus Poll Picture:

There was a singer in Batman: Mystery of the Batwoman who caught our eye.  She seemed to get a disproportionally large amount of close ups and screen time for a nameless background character.

Huntik: Secrets & Seekers [2009] Season 1. 26 Episodes

Huntik_title

Huntik: Secrets and Seekers is a show directed and produced by Ignio Straffi, the creator of Winx Club.  Huntik is a radical departure from Winx in that it is an action packed adventure with mature themes.  Its first season is of the finer non-Japanese animated series we have seen in some time.

Huntik_dante_explosion_seeker_vale

Huntik co-stars the supremely competent Dante Vale. Here he strikes quite the action hero pose.

Now the patented (and challenging) one sentence synopsis:  In a world of secret societies and creatures summoned from ancient amulets called titans enters young Lok, a boy searching for his father lost years before on a mission to find legendary amulets against the wishes of the evil “Professor” who was bent on stopping him and now sets his sights on Lok who fortunately has the help of three formidable characters who will aid him in his battle against the Professor and along the way learn about his father, himself, and the power of deep affection.

Huntik_lok_amulet_summon_titan

Lok grows to become quite the seeker. Here he summons a mighty titan by hoisting — the Jetix logo?

Huntik_freelancer

Freelancer is one of the more likable go-to titans. (They get cool backgrounds; it’s in their contract.)

Huntik_lok_sophie_romance_hug

Is Lok clueless regarding female affection? No comment.

Even our one sentence synopsis cannot do justice to the the fun complexities of the Huntik plot.  Each episode is structured like a chapter in a book, and like a good book you want very much to go on to the next.  That is hard to maintain but Huntik did an amazing job keeping the quality, drama and action up for 26 episodes.

Huntik_dante_summon_titan_vale

Okay Dante Vale, we get it. You’re a bass a$$.

Huntik_Sophie_sheba_costume_dress

In some good ways Huntik was formulaic in that you expected and got an intense action scene at the end of each episode.  However it was also constantly evolving and ever more powerful bad guys and titans kept entering the stage.   The plot did not wander like some shows plagued with filler stories, rather nearly every episode somehow pointed to the main arc.

Huntik_klaus_razimouf_villains

Which of these two creepizoids is a villain? The evil monocle-wearing German accented freak, or the eerie eastern European colorless weirdo?  Ha, a trick question.  They are both appalling.

Huntik_immortality_titan_summon

The summons got huge. The government could not write this one off as a “weather balloon”.

The complexities of the characters also grew more intense and stayed fresh.  What motivates powerful Dante Vale?  What secrets is mysterious Zhalia Moon hiding?  Will potent Sophie Casterwill come to like Lok?  And will Lok find his long lost father?

Huntik_Zhalia_trinity_spy_peek

Zhalia Moon. Does this look like a girl who is hiding something?

Huntik_Sophie_angry_attack_magic

Do not let Sophie Casterwill’s appearance dissuade you from her “world’s most dangerous teen” moniker. It is indeed true.

The artwork was consistent and well done.  The characters designs had -well, character.  The titans were quite varied, and if not designed exactly to our tastes they were true to the universe.  The painted backgrounds were high quality and sometimes nearly spectacular.

Huntik_painted_background_temple_ruins

Huntik_painted_background_train_station

Huntik cosplay! The true test of cultural penetration and popularity.

There was a certain unique stylishness to the whole production.  From the cool outfits the characters wore to the opening title scrolls for each episode.  Additionally computer graphics were pleasingly incorporated when – - their portable computer devices displayed things.  Shocking!

Huntik_computer_graphics_titan

How much longer must mankind wait for holographic displays?

Huntik_scroll_title_episode

Huntik_Sophie_uneven_stockings

Sophie Casterwill has a thing about uneven stockings. Really.

Huntik_dante_lok_sophie_uneven_skirt

On the rare occasions Sophie was not wearing stockings she could make uneven, she was sure to wear something else asymmetrical. I.E. this skirt. (Yes Dante, you are cool in your long coat. Shut up.)

Huntik succeeds in bringing to life a believable world filled with unique nomenclature.  Phrases like “boltflare”, “hyperstride”, and even the rare “double spell” are those to which you soon get accustomed.  You will get that good feeling of travel as you tag along on visits to far flung locations and ancient ruins.

Huntik_painted_background_temple_ruins_2

Huntik_professor_bad_guy_villain

Count the Professor’s bad guy clues in this picture. Uneven eyes. Check. Horrid skin discolorations. Check. Evil reddish background. Check. Fat wide face with meanie grimace. Obvious.

Huntik_Zhalia_fire_snow_hat

The Huntik recipe?

  1. 2 parts Indiana Jones
  2. 1 part Yu-Gi-Oh!
  3. 1 part Harry Potter
  4. Stir in ample diced loyalty.
  5. Mix together with liberal pinches of style and a little romance for 26 episodes.
  6. Add intense spices that may cause flavor explosions and a little tearing.
Huntik_Cherit_titan_sidekick_power_up

It was fun having a weak sidekick, Cherit, that occasionally kicked serious butt. “Not on my watch!”

Huntik_sophie_spell_casterwill

Huntik_Sophie_stairs_background_painted

“Holy liability! Didn’t anyone think to put a railing here!?”

It was a season that was not afraid to leave you with unresolved problems at the end of an episode.  It even sometimes set the characters back with defeats.  In fact many plot issues were handled in a realistic way.  In the end some problems will still not be fixed, and while there will be victory and some comeuppance, there will be a little sadness too.

Huntik_sabriel_sophie_battle_professor_amulet

If Sophie’s lone stand against the Professor does not make you a little sad, cut your arm open to see if you’re an android.

Complex plots and mature themes bolster this exemplary series.  It is for those seeking quality and something a little different.  Check it out of you like deeper plots and tire of anime stereotypes.  If that sounds at all appealing, it is unlikely that Huntik will disappoint.

Huntik_Zhalia_hair_face

Zhalia says:  “Watch it or I will kick you in the face.”

Check out the Huntik opening once described to us as a “rock anthem!”

Winx Club [2004] Season 1. 26 Episodes

Winx_bloom_flora_stella

winx_supp_se02_61

Italian producer/writer/creator Iginio Straffi put together a unique television show with international appeal. Two key reasons for this success were timeless themes and classic story elements.

With all the darkness threatening our world these days, it was great to see people overcoming evil and their own weaknesses to triumph.  Other themes like finding one’s true self and real friendship are hallmarks of not only Winx Club, but many of today’s most popular shows.

All geeks are not as good looking as Tecna. You only see that in animated shows, ...and Hollywood movies.

All geeks are not as good looking as Tecna. You only see that in animated shows, ...and Hollywood movies.

Another reason for its wild success was its consistent art direction and visual flair.  Winx Club did not try to be less edgy anime, nor Disney fare.  Instead it took its own path with stylized fashions, character designs, vehicles and environments.  Undoubtedly Winx Club’s first targeted audience is young girls.  To that end the focus is primarily on the lead female characters.  However Winx Club can also be appreciated by anyone who likes a show with a ton of heart.

Flora was the sweetest of the girls, although her powers over plant life could squash you like a grape.

Flora was the sweetest of the girls, although her powers over plant life could squash you like a grape.

winx_supp_se01_41The story is about a young girl who comes of age to learn she has magic powers and (after a time) is a princess.  Her biological parents are believed dead, but her search for them will form the longest arc.  She goes off into another realm to learn about her powers and heritage and makes 4 friends who will be her allies throughout the series.  Classic elements seen in many old stories and modern fiction.

This first season sets the stage and builds the foundation for seasons 2, 3 and the first movie.  It sets in motion a welcome arc weaved throughout many of the episodes.  As a result you always felt like you were going someplace beyond a single episode’s goal as the lead character Bloom learned more about and grew in her powers.

What ever happened to Stella's Solarian Sun Staff that turned into a ring and allowed her to travel across dimensions? Forgotten in the realm of diused plot devices along with second season's "Charmix".

What ever happened to Stella's Solarian Sun Staff that turned into a ring and allowed her to travel across dimensions? Forgotten in the realm of disused plot devices along with season two's "Charmix".

Like many a superhero show, when it came time to fight the baddies the girls transformed into their magical outfits.  These were pretty and dare I say a little racy, but hey, it’s Italian.  They can get away with it.

Bloom: Okay, it is not the most practical combat wear, but it is easy on the eyes.

Bloom: Okay, it is not the most practical combat wear, but it is easy on the eyes.

winx_supp_se01_5Three main schools exist for the teaching of youngsters in this dimension.  Alfea is where the girl leads go (fairies) and is for “lawful good” magical girls if you will pardon the D&D alignment.  The not-so-good magical girls (witches) go to Cloud Tower. They are anything from lawful evil to chaotic good.  The mostly non-magical guys go to Red Fountain where they use special weapons and vehicles training to be “heroes”.

"Sky, you are so manly." --- "I know. It's this pose."

The three main villains for season 1 are (later) expelled witches with bad attitudes.  They went all the way chaotic evil.  The English dubbing for these three and all the characters really is a bit over the top, but it worked.  The drama was sometimes quite serious.  More so than would be in a similarly targeted recent American release.  Likely the differing Italian standards.  There were historical deaths, real danger, and permanent disfigurement (life as a pumpkin) to deal with.  The seriousness added to the drama for sure.

Stormy, Darcy, and Icey could electrocute you, burn your mind, and/or freeze you solid... in that order.

Stormy, Darcy, and Icey could electrocute you, burn your mind, and/or freeze you solid... in that order.

Each fairy fought with unique powers.

  • Bloom  –   dragon flame
  • Flora    –   plants
  • Tecna   –   technology (no surprise)
  • Stella    –   sun power
  • Musa    -   music

Note to bad guys: If you ever see this look in your show's lead character, exit immediately.

Note to bad guys: If you ever see this look in your show's lead character (Bloom), exit immediately.

The multi-episode finale of the first season got pretty intense with an all out army sized battle at Alfea and a desperate showdown between Bloom and the head witch baddie Icy.  You see the final blow only from a great distance as a huge emission of dragon flame.  A fitting dramatic device that makes you imagine the final hit.

Winx Cub is a feel good gem with clearly defined good guys and bad guys that should appeal to young girls.  You might also like it if you like pretty designs, stories about friendship and overcoming adversity themes.

"Would I lie?"
